Zanzibar is a region in Tanzania, but not everyone knows that it has its own government. What is commonly referred to as “Zanzibar” is actually the island of Unguja, the main island of the archipelago of the same name.
Located in the Indian Ocean, east of the East African coast, the Zanzibar archipelago comprises two main islands: Unguja (also known as “Zanzibar”) and Pemba, along with around forty smaller islands, many of which are uninhabited. This archipelago, together with Mafia Island, is part of the famous “Spice Islands”. Stone Town, the main town of Unguja is an ancient trading centre with mosques and winding alleys.
